Lake Apopka is a large freshwater lake located west of Orlando FL and along the western side of Winter Garden FL. This lake is a secret bass haven and though to be the next lake to produce a world record. Public access is available although navigating the lake can have some challenges.
Lake Apopka has a tremendously long shoreline. However there are few suitable boat launches for public use. The one above is one of the finest and is suitable for most privately owned trailered vessels. This lake is not the best place to take larger yacht type vessels because of shallow areas with obstacles. Strongly consider a guide is you are not an experiences and cautious boater.
The lake has a total surface area of 30,909 square feet (over 48 square miles). It is fed primarily by runoff and rain water. The Lake Apopka watershed which feeds the lake covers 134.6 square miles, 83 named lakes and ponds and 5 named rivers and streams. While the mean depth is only 7 feet the maximum depth is around 12 feet.
Lake Apopka is an important ecological resource and it is a home to may plant and wildlife species. Those species include the Sandhill Crane and Florida Scrub Jay. Other species include the Ibis and many wading birds.
You can do a lot of bird watching from the public pier located at Newton Park on the lakes southeast shore. Although the lake faced some pollution challenges in the 1950's it is recovering due to state and local efforts. There is plenty to enjoy at Lake Apopka in Winter Garden FL.
