Johns Lake is a large lake located in Winter Garden FL. Johns Lake is in the westernmost portion of the city and the 34787 zip code. This is a natural lake and covers an area of approximately 2,580 acres. The lake is a popular spot for recreational boating, fishing and water sports.
Johns Lake is named after John H. Johns who owned a great deal of local property here in the late 1800's. Bordering cities include Clermont Florida and Oakland Florida. The lake is now totally surrounded by communities and hundreds of lakefront mansions line its shores. If you are lucky enough to live on this lake you will find it takes over 2 hours to patrol it's shorelines.
The water here consistently rates superior to Lake Apopka to the north. I have found the water to be both clear and teaming with fish and wildlife. It helps that there are some grass carp that feed on the weeds and bottom growth. However bass fishing is what the lake is locally known for. The mean depth is 12 feet and the deepest portion is around 25 feet deep. As my dad used to say "12 feet isn't very far but it is real deep".
Public access to this lake is somewhat limited. The ramp and facilities above are public but most of the shore line is covered with communities. All of the communities with boat ramps are also gated. Not all of the gated communities have boat ramps.
Deer Island and Turkey Island are the two islands. Deer Island is much larger and more populated. It is accessed off of the south side of Colonial Drive but the only entrance is gated. Many of the homes on Deer Island are worth millions. Emerald Pointe or Turkey Island is inside of Hickory Hammock. There are two gated entrances separating Emerald Point from public view. Turkey Island has very few homes but they are all relatively new and amazing. Thank you for researching Johns Lake in Winter Garden FL.
