Yes, real estate is a good career choice for some people if they get and listen to proper guidance and have realistic expectations for that match their personality and evolving skillset. Follow along with me and we will cover this in detail, with no sales pitch.
Why would I start off with that? Because I want you to listen and benefit from what I am sharing. I will not make money from you or sell you anything. I just want you to be aware of what the real estate industry is like as real estate agents. The brokerage firm you will work for does make money from real estate agents even when real estate agents fail.
Most real estate brokers will charge you just to allow you to try to succeed. You will need to place your license under a broker to work in this industry and they typically will charge desk fees and other types of office fees. You may have to pay monthly or just pay up to date after a sale closes.
Having a successful career in real estate will require only you to act, you are now a self employed person that sets your own schedule . Generating leads will be your primary challenge. This is a new career and your friends and family will know you are new at it.
They may not be as fast to trust you with the sale of a home as you think. It is like trusting a new stock broker from their prospective and possibly foolish depending on their opinion of you. Many a new agents fail early on because of this.
How? a successful real estate agent can get leads. Even if you are a terrible agent and can get enough opportunities you will eventually make money, and hopefully get better at your trade. Selling properties as a licensed real estate agent or Realtor means finding sellers and qualifiable buyers then closing real estate sales.
The reality is most real estate agents fail. Even if they fail the real estate companies, the schools, the national association and the state makes money off of them. Of course this business is promoted because the industry makes money off people who fail or succeed.
After you get your real estate license you do get to set your own schedule, be your own boss (kind of), work your own hours and have a flexible schedule. A good real estate agent realizes they need to work a lot their first five to ten years just to develop clients. Lead generation or lack of it will cause you to fail or provide you the opportunity to succeed.
My suggestions to new agents are find a broker willing to actually work with you and assist you. This will be difficult because so many agents fail and brokers work for nothing. The next alternative is try to get on a successful team. Work hard, do what you are told and maybe you will make it. After 50 or so successful closings you will be on your way to having a real estate career.
